I think this was a meerkat having a snack . . .

. . . giraffe . . .
. . . a couple of monkeys taking pictures . . .
. . . a tortoise . . .
. . . a grey crowned crane. . .
. . . a peacock we saw when we sat down for lunch. This one was right beside the table we were sitting at. About a week after we visited the zoo, I heard that a peacock had attacked a 2 year old at the Calgary Zoo - I wonder if it was this one!!!
Flamingos . . .
. . . more monkeys - these ones are eating popsicles!
And this one has a red tongue.
This was the first time I had seen an elephant with steel covers over its tusks. I read a story later that these are actually caps that were made because the elephant has cracked its tusk playing with a tire, which could have lead to an infection. Here is part of the story: "Local organisations and businesses joined in to help the zoo protect Spike. The 14-kilogram (31-pound) prosthetics were designed using computer-generated models and made by instructors at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, at a donated cost estimated at around $8,450. The tusk-caps were made of stainless steel donated by a Calgary firm, Corus Steel."
Monkeys resting. . .
One of the cutest red pandas I have ever seen . . .
The freakiest bats I have ever seen - they were HUGE! They are appropriately called megabats, or fruit bats. The largest ones have a wing span of over 5.5 feet!
Holly and Illya bought matching snow tigers. Holly named hers "Snowy Stripes".
There are some very cool sculptures at the zoo . . .
These ones line the entrance:
After our visit to the zoo, we met up with Paul and took a bike ride around the Glenmore Reservoir. They have excellent bike trails all around Calgary.
